I love fashion. I love getting dressed, putting outfits together, finding a really good pair of jeans and convincing myself I need another pair of ballet flats when I very much do not.
But as much as I love fashion, I’ve never really been drawn to outfits that look like they took hours to put together. My favourite kind of fashion has always been the kind that feels effortless. The kind where someone looks really well dressed, but you can’t quite figure out why.
And I think part of that comes from realizing that loving fashion doesn’t mean you need to be wearing the most extravagant outfit every time you leave the house. You don’t need a closet full of statement pieces or a completely different look every day to have fun with fashion.
Sometimes, I actually think the simplest pieces give you the most room to be creative.

It’s about knowing how to style what you have
Give me a good pair of jeans, a white T-shirt, a cardigan and a pair of flats and I can probably come up with about ten different outfits.
Okay, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration. But you get what I mean.
I love having pieces in my wardrobe that I can wear over and over again and style in completely different ways. The fun part of fashion, at least for me, is figuring out those little details that make the same pieces feel new.
Take a cardigan, for example. You can button it all the way up, wear it open over a T-shirt, wear it backwards, tuck a little bit of it into your jeans or leave the last button undone so your belt shows through and gives you a little more shape at the waist.
Same cardigan. Completely different outfit.
That’s the part of fashion I find fun.
My favourite styling trick will always be a white T-shirt
I will never get tired of a white T-shirt underneath knitwear.
There’s something about letting the neckline peek out from underneath a sweater or cardigan that makes a very simple outfit feel so much more intentional. Add jeans and ballet flats and you have an outfit that is technically incredibly basic, but somehow still feels styled.
And that’s exactly what I love about effortless fashion. It isn’t about having more pieces. It’s about knowing what to do with the pieces you already have.
The little things make the outfit
I’m a big believer that sometimes you only need one tiny adjustment to make an outfit feel different.
Leave the bottom button of your cardigan undone. Cuff your jeans once. Push your sweater sleeves up. Let the collar and cuffs of a button-down peek out from underneath a knit. Add a belt. Throw a sweater over your shoulders.
None of these things are revolutionary styling secrets, but they can completely change the way an outfit looks.
And I think that’s why I’ve always liked simple fashion. There’s room to play with it.
When you have an outfit that’s already covered in statement pieces, there isn’t always much left to do. But when you start with something simple, you can experiment with proportions, textures, accessories, layers and shoes.
Simple doesn’t mean boring
I think there’s sometimes a misconception that effortless fashion means boring fashion.
It doesn’t.
You can love simple outfits and still be someone who genuinely loves fashion. In fact, I think there’s something very fashionable about knowing how to make basics feel like your basics.
Maybe it’s wearing ballet flats with jeans instead of sneakers. Maybe it’s adding a belt to an oversized cardigan. Maybe it’s pairing something feminine with something casual, or mixing different textures so an otherwise neutral outfit has a little more dimension.
You can take the same white T-shirt and jeans and make them feel completely different depending on what you do around them.
That’s where the creativity comes in.
I’d rather have pieces I can play with
I’ve realized that I’d much rather have a wardrobe full of pieces that I genuinely love and can style in lots of different ways than a closet full of things that only work for one very specific outfit.
Because when you love the pieces in your wardrobe, getting dressed becomes less about what am I supposed to wear? and more about how can I wear this today?
And that feels much more like fashion to me.
It also makes repeating outfits so much less boring. You can wear the same jeans three times in one week and nobody has to know they’re technically the same jeans. Change the shoes, switch up the layers, add a different belt or bag, wear your sweater differently. Suddenly, it feels like a new outfit.
The goal isn’t to look like you tried the hardest
I think my favourite outfits are the ones where you can tell someone has a good sense of personal style, but it doesn’t feel like they’re trying to prove it.
There’s something really cool about looking put together without looking overly put together.
And maybe that’s what effortless fashion means to me. Not dressing down. Not being boring. Not never caring about trends.
Just knowing how to take simple pieces and make them feel interesting.
Because loving fashion isn’t about needing the biggest, boldest or most complicated outfit in the room. Sometimes it’s a white T-shirt under your favourite sweater, a cardigan with one button left undone, jeans that are cuffed just right and a pair of shoes you’ve worn a hundred times.
The pieces might be simple.
The way you put them together doesn’t have to be.
