How to Start Fresh This September

4–5 minutes

There’s something about September that makes me want to get my life together.

I want to clean my room, reorganize my closet, make a new workout schedule, plan dinners for the week, buy a few new sweaters and somehow become the kind of person who wakes up early and drinks water before coffee.

Will all of this happen? TBD.

But there is something about the beginning of September that naturally makes you want to reset a little. Maybe it’s because we’ve spent the last few months in full summer mode and suddenly there’s a bit more structure in the air. The mornings are cooler, the days are getting shorter, and everyone is slowly getting back into their routines.

It feels like a good time to check in with yourself.

Let summer be summer

I love summer. I love the late nights, the dresses, the patios, the beach days and having absolutely no interest in knowing what day of the week it is.

But eventually, summer starts to feel like it’s winding down. And instead of trying to squeeze every last bit out of it, I think there’s something nice about letting it end naturally.

You don’t have to be sad that summer is over. You also don’t have to immediately become a fall girl overnight.

You can still wear your sandals when the weather allows. You can still order an iced coffee. You can still pretend 17 degrees is warm enough to sit outside.

September is a transition, not a hard launch into fall.

A reset doesn’t mean changing your entire life

I think we sometimes treat September like a second New Year’s.

Suddenly we need new goals, a new routine, a new workout plan, a new skincare routine, a new hobby and possibly a completely new personality.

Maybe we can relax.

A reset can be much simpler than that. It can mean getting back into a routine that actually works for you. Cleaning out your closet. Booking the appointments you’ve been putting off. Getting back into cooking at home. Going for more walks. Making plans with friends.

Basically, doing the little things that make you feel like you have your life somewhat under control.

Somewhat is key.

Make room for what’s next

A change of season is also a pretty good excuse to take stock of what’s working and what isn’t.

Maybe your schedule has gotten a little chaotic. Maybe you’ve been saying yes to everything and are ready for a few quieter weekends. Maybe you’ve been meaning to get back into working out, reading, cooking or whatever else you told yourself you’d do “once things calm down.”

September is a good time to start.

Not because you suddenly need to be more productive, but because routines can be comforting. There’s something nice about knowing what your week looks like, having a few things to look forward to and feeling a little more organized.

And if your version of being organized is simply putting clean laundry away instead of living out of the basket, that counts too.

Ease into the season

One of my favourite things about this time of year is the in-between period.

It’s still warm enough for summer clothes, but you can finally start thinking about sweaters. You can order an iced coffee and wear a jacket. You can go for a walk without immediately melting. You can start making fall plans without actually having to give up summer yet.

Take advantage of it.

You don’t need to rush into pumpkin everything on September 1st. Let the season change gradually. Start pulling out your favourite sweaters. Make a few cozy dinners. Plan a weekend away. Go for an evening walk. Buy the candle that smells like something vaguely autumnal.

There’s plenty of time for the full fall experience.

Think about what you actually want

Rather than making a long list of things you want to accomplish before the end of the year, I like the idea of asking yourself a few simple questions:

What have I been enjoying lately?

What have I been missing?

What do I want more of?

What do I want less of?

What would make my everyday life feel a little better?

The answers don’t have to be groundbreaking. Maybe you want more dinners with friends. More time outside. More movement. Less time scrolling. More travel. More nights at home. Less clutter.

It’s not about creating a completely different life. It’s about making your current one feel a little more like yours.

Enjoy the fact that things are changing

There’s something refreshing about knowing that the next few months won’t look exactly like the last few.

You’ll probably have different plans, different outfits, different routines and maybe even a few unexpected things thrown into the mix.

That’s part of the fun.

So yes, use September as your excuse to clean out your closet, make a fresh playlist, get back into a routine and buy the sweater you absolutely do not need.

Just don’t put too much pressure on yourself to have everything figured out by October.

Happy fall!

Love, Laura
