If you’ve been waiting for a sign to get serious about what you want, consider this it.
Today is August 8th, aka 8/8, which is considered one of the most powerful manifestation days of the year. In spiritual and manifestation circles, August 8th is associated with the Lion’s Gate Portal, a period believed to be especially powerful for abundance, confidence, new beginnings and stepping into the next version of yourself.
Now, I’m not saying that writing down your dream life tonight means the universe is going to drop your dream apartment, perfect career and soulmate at your doorstep tomorrow morning. But I am a believer in the power of getting intentional about what you want, and if 8/8 gives us an excuse to pause, reflect and romanticize our future for an evening, I’m certainly not complaining.
So, if you’re going to manifest, you might as well do it properly.
What makes 8/8 so special?
The number eight has long been associated with abundance, prosperity, balance and infinite possibility. Turn it on its side and you get the infinity symbol, which is part of the reason 8/8 has become such a popular date for manifestation rituals.
August 8th is also connected to the Lion’s Gate Portal, which is traditionally said to peak around this time. The concept combines astrology and ancient Egyptian traditions with the seasonal rising of Sirius and the Sun’s position in Leo. For those who follow manifestation practices, it’s seen as a particularly powerful time to set intentions, release old patterns and get clear about what you want to call into your life.
Whether you’re deeply spiritual or just someone who loves an excuse to light a candle and journal, I think there’s something useful in the ritual itself. Sometimes we get so caught up in our everyday routines that we don’t stop to ask ourselves what we’re actually working toward.
And that’s what today is really about.
Get clear on what you actually want
Before you open Pinterest and start saving pictures of European summer vacations, beautiful kitchens and women drinking coffee in linen dresses, take a minute to think about what you actually want your life to look and feel like.
Not what you think you’re supposed to want. Not what looks impressive from the outside. And definitely not what everyone else seems to be doing.
What would make you genuinely happy?
Maybe it’s a career that excites you, more financial freedom, deeper friendships, more travel or a home that feels like your own. Maybe it’s something less tangible, like feeling more confident, peaceful, creative or excited about your everyday life.
Try writing down what that looks like in as much detail as possible. Instead of simply writing, “I want to be happier,” think about what happiness would actually look like in your day-to-day life. What would your mornings feel like? Who would you spend your time with? What would you have more time for? What would you stop worrying about?
The more specific you can be, the easier it becomes to recognize the choices and opportunities that actually align with the life you’re imagining.
Make your 8/8 manifestation list
Obviously, we’re going to work with the number eight.
Take your journal and write down eight things you’re calling into your life. They can be huge, tiny, practical, completely unrealistic or somewhere in between. This isn’t the time to edit yourself.
Maybe you’re manifesting more travel, a new job, financial freedom, a creative project you’ve been putting off, stronger friendships, more confidence, a beautiful home or simply a year that feels exciting again.
Try writing your manifestations in the present tense, as though you’re already becoming the person who has these things. Instead of “I want to travel more,” you could write, “I have the freedom and opportunity to travel and experience new places.” Instead of “I want to be more confident,” try, “I trust myself and feel confident taking opportunities that excite me.”
It’s not about pretending that something has already happened. It’s about shifting your attention toward the life you’re trying to create.
Create a vision board that actually feels like you
Once you’ve figured out what you’re manifesting, it’s time for the fun part.
Open Pinterest, make a new board and start collecting images that represent the life you’re working toward. But don’t make it entirely about material things. Think about the feeling behind what you’re saving.
If you’re manifesting travel, save the places that make you feel curious and free. If you’re manifesting a new career, save images that represent how you want your work life to feel. If you’re craving a slower, more peaceful lifestyle, save the little everyday moments that represent that: long walks, dinner with friends, slow mornings, reading before bed.
Your vision board doesn’t need to look like someone else’s idea of a perfect life. In fact, I think the best ones are the ones that feel incredibly personal.
And yes, make it pretty. Obviously.
Make some room for what you’re asking for
One of my favourite parts of any manifestation ritual is the idea of releasing what no longer fits.
Take another page in your journal and write down eight things you’re ready to leave behind. Maybe it’s comparison, overthinking, people-pleasing, fear of failure, constantly checking what everyone else is doing or the feeling that you’re somehow behind in life.
You don’t have to magically stop doing these things tomorrow. The point is simply to acknowledge them and decide that they don’t get to have quite as much control over your next chapter.
It’s hard to make room for something new when you’re still holding onto everything old.
And then… actually do something
This is the part I think sometimes gets lost in manifestation culture.
You can write the affirmation, make the vision board and light the candle, but at some point, you have to meet the universe halfway.
If you’re manifesting a new job, apply for one. If you’re manifesting more travel, start looking at destinations. If you’re manifesting a creative project, open the document and start it. If you’re manifesting better friendships, text the person you’ve been meaning to see.
It doesn’t have to be some huge, life-changing decision. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is take one small step in the direction you’ve been talking about going.
Manifestation is a lot more fun when you give it something to work with.
Think about who you’re becoming
Instead of only asking yourself “What do I want?”, ask yourself “Who do I want to become?”
Maybe the version of you you’re working toward is more confident, more adventurous, more disciplined or simply less afraid of making the wrong decision.
You don’t have to completely transform yourself overnight. Start looking for the little choices that your future self might make. Maybe she sends the email instead of overthinking it for three days. Maybe she says yes to something that scares her. Maybe she stops chasing something that clearly isn’t right for her. Maybe she finally starts taking her own goals seriously.
You don’t have to wait until you become that person to start acting like her.
Don’t forget to appreciate what you already have
There’s one thing I think is important to remember when you’re constantly thinking about the next version of your life: wanting more doesn’t mean you aren’t grateful for what you already have.
Take a few minutes tonight to write down eight things you’re grateful for. They don’t have to be huge. In fact, I think the little things are sometimes the best ones: your favourite coffee, a friend who always makes you laugh, a summer evening, your favourite song, a family dinner, a place you love going to or something you’re genuinely looking forward to.
There’s something about appreciating your current life that makes it much easier to figure out what you actually want to change.
Your 8/8 ritual for tonight
If you want to fully lean into the energy of the day, make yourself a little evening out of it. Put your phone away for 20 minutes, make your favourite drink, light a candle and grab your journal.
Write down eight things you’re manifesting, eight things you’re releasing and eight things you’re grateful for. Then spend some time creating or updating your vision board and choose one small action you can take tomorrow that moves you closer to one of your goals.
And then let it go.
You don’t need to spend the next week analyzing every coincidence and wondering whether the universe has received your order. Set the intention, take the action and allow yourself to be open to opportunities you might not have expected.
So… does manifestation actually work?
There isn’t scientific evidence that writing down a desire specifically on August 8th causes the universe to make it happen. But there is something genuinely useful about setting goals, visualizing what you want, paying attention to opportunities and taking intentional action.
Maybe that’s the real magic of a day like 8/8.
It gives you a reason to stop scrolling for a minute and ask yourself what you actually want. It gives you permission to dream a little bigger, let go of some of the things that have been holding you back and make a plan for where you want to go next.
Whether you believe in the Lion’s Gate Portal, manifestation or simply the power of a good journal session, there’s no harm in using today as a little reset.
Write it down. Make the vision board. Set the intention. Take the first step.
And then go live your life like it’s already beginning to come together.
Happy 8/8. Here’s to the life we’re creating. ♾️
Love, Laura
