There are a few styling rules I come back to over and over again, and this is one of them: when in doubt, add a white tee.
It’s simple. It’s low effort. It doesn’t require buying anything new or reinventing your wardrobe. But somehow, it makes almost any outfit look more put together. Sweater feeling a little plain? Add a white tee. Hoodie looking too casual? Add a white tee. Button down missing something? You already know.
I call it the little poke out effect, and once you start doing it, you won’t stop.
Why This Works Every Single Time
There’s something about that crisp line of white peeking out at the neckline or hem that instantly adds dimension. It breaks up heavier fabrics, softens darker colours, and makes oversized pieces feel more intentional.
It’s giving model off duty vibes in the best way. Like you just threw something on, but it still looks styled. Relaxed but polished. Casual but cool.
I especially love it with:
- An oversized crewneck and straight leg jeans
- A slouchy hoodie and leggings
- A chunky knit and tailored trousers
- A slightly unbuttoned button down layered over a tee
And if you’re wearing all black? That tiny flash of white at the collar completely changes the outfit. It adds contrast and makes everything feel sharper.
My Go-To White Tee
Not all white tees hit the same, though.
My favourite for this look is the baby tee from Uniqlo. The collar is high cut enough that you see it just enough. Not too scooped, not too wide. It creates a clean, structured line at the neckline that makes the layering feel intentional instead of accidental.
It’s also slightly fitted, which helps it sit smoothly under sweaters without bunching or adding bulk. No awkward lumps. No constant adjusting. Just a crisp little frame that does its job.
For the Outfit Repeaters
If you’re big on outfit repeating (same), this trick is everything. It makes the same sweater feel new. The same hoodie feel styled. The same jeans feel like you actually planned the look. All from one extra layer you probably already own.
So that’s the rule. When in doubt, add a white tee. Let it peek out just enough. Keep it simple. Let it give that effortless, model off duty energy without trying too hard.
Are you team white tee?
Love, Laura
