The Outfits That Take Me From Work to Drinks (Without an Outfit Change)

3–4 minutes

For when your day starts at your desk and ends with a drink in hand. Lately, I’ve been trying to make the most of my in-office days. Between work, life, and everything in between, finding time to see friends or dates on weekends can be tough — so I’ve started meeting up with them after work instead. It’s become one of my favourite little routines: finishing the day, closing my laptop, and heading straight to dinner or drinks with people who work nearby.

Of course, that means my outfit has to work just as hard as I do. I need something that’s polished enough for a full day at the office but still feels cute and me once the clock hits five. That’s where my 9-to-5 to 5-to-9 outfit formula comes in — a mix of easy, versatile pieces that take me from desk to dinner without a full outfit change (or a second thought).

My Everyday Staples

My formula always starts with one of my go-tos:

  • a black mini dress (the definition of “throw on and go”),
  • a mini skirt that pairs with just about anything, or
  • a pair of tailored trousers that instantly pull a look together.

Each of these pieces feels true to my style — feminine, simple, and easy to build around. They’re the kind of basics that look just as good with a blazer at 10 a.m. as they do with a cocktail in hand at 7 p.m.

Add Layers That Work Double Duty

When I’m dressing for the office, I usually start with one of those base pieces and then add a structured blazer or cropped cardigan — something that instantly makes me look a little more put-together. But the trick is what’s underneath.

If I know I have plans after work, I’ll wear a sleek tank, fitted tee, or a slightly dressier top under the blazer so I can slip it off later and instantly look more “night-out” without trying. Think: subtle layering that gives you options.

The Shoe Swap Rule (or Don’t!)

If I’m heading straight from work to plans, I plan my shoes with that in mind. Most days, I reach for ballet flats — they’re comfortable, chic, and honestly work for both the office and after-hours. Sometimes I’ll toss a pair of strappy heels or pointed mules in my tote just in case, but I’ve realized that the right pair of ballet flats can totally carry you through dinner or drinks without missing a beat.

Accessories Make the Shift

This is where the magic happens. During the day, I keep things minimal — small gold hoops, simple bracelet stack, and my everyday watch. But once I’m off the clock, I like to have a few easy “switch-ups” ready.

If I’m heading out, I’ll swap my tote for a smaller bag, add a statement earring, or throw on a bold lip. It takes two minutes, but it gives the whole outfit new energy. A little effort goes a long way — especially when it comes to how you feel.

Keep It Confident

The truth is, the best 9-to-5 to 5-to-9 outfit isn’t about following a formula — it’s about wearing something that makes you feel like you. You don’t need to go home and change to feel confident. Sometimes, all it takes is a great outfit, a good pair of shoes, and a plan with people who make you laugh after a long day.

At the end of the day, getting dressed for work (and whatever comes after) doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s about having a few go-to pieces that make you feel confident, comfortable, and ready for anything — whether that’s a busy morning in the office or a spontaneous night out with friends. And honestly? Don’t let anyone tell you you’re overdressed or “too much” for the office.

If it makes you feel good, wear it.

Love, Laura
