How to Stop Dreading Your 9-5

2–3 minutes

We’ve all heard it: “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” And while that sounds great in theory, let’s be real—most of us do feel like we’re working. Even if we enjoy our job, there are still early mornings, endless emails, and awkward small talk that make some days drag.

But instead of counting down the hours until Friday or fantasizing about quitting everything to move to the Amalfi Coast, what if we learned to make peace with the 9–5? Better yet—what if we actually found ways to enjoy it?

Find Your Work Crew (Even a Mini One)

You don’t need to become besties with everyone in the office. But having a few people you actually like can make a huge difference. Whether it’s someone to vent to after a wild meeting or a go-to lunch buddy, those small relationships can completely shift the energy of your day.

Having “your people” at work makes even the worst Mondays feel more manageable. Plus, who else is going to laugh at the chaos of a presentation or your third coffee run of the day?

Remember: Work Isn’t Your Whole Personality

Your job can be important without being your everything. Not every passion needs to become a paycheck, and not every job needs to spark your soul on fire. Sometimes, your 9–5 is what gives you the freedom to chase the stuff you really love after hours—travel, content creation, weekend side hustles, hobbies that light you up.

It doesn’t have to be your dream job. It can just be the thing that helps fund your dream life.

Romanticize the Little Things

Turn your daily routine into a vibe. A morning playlist that makes you feel like the main character. A cute coffee mug that gives your desk some personality. A post-lunch walk with a podcast that feels like a chat with your big sister.

Workdays feel different when you sprinkle in those mini moments of joy. No, it won’t fix a toxic team or an overwhelming workload—but it will make the day feel less robotic.

Don’t Skip the Morning Routine

Rolling out of bed five minutes before your first meeting? Chaos. Instead, create a pre-work ritual that helps you ease into the day. Whether that’s journaling, stretching, or just taking your time with your skincare, it makes a huge difference.

The goal is to start the day for you, not just for your inbox.

Set Real Boundaries (Then Actually Respect Them)

There’s nothing cute about burnout. Start protecting your evenings and weekends like they’re non-negotiable. Mute the Teams pings. Stop checking emails during dinner. That message can wait until tomorrow—promise.

Work-life balance might be a buzzword, but it’s also a survival strategy.

You’re allowed to want more for your career and still find joy in the season you’re in. Maybe work will never be the highlight of your week—but it also doesn’t have to be the thing you dread.

It can be a stepping stone, a tool, a means to an end—and still be something you handle with confidence and grace. Lean into the community, carve out the small joys, and remember: you’re allowed to be a work in progress while still showing up and getting it done.

Love, Laura
