I’m Living Life the European Way & You Should Too

2–3 minutes

There’s something so fascinating about the european way of life. it’s not just about the breathtaking landscapes or the rich cultural heritage; it’s about a philosophy of living that emphasizes pleasure, connection and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of everyday living. In a world that often feels rushed and frenetic, there’s much we can learn from the europeans about how to slow down and truly savour life.

An interesting aspect of the european lifestyle is found in the blue zones. these are regions identified by researchers where people live significantly longer and healthier lives. Sardinia, italy, where my grandfather is from, happens to be one. Right in the heart of the mediterranean, it is more than just a picturesque island with beautiful beaches and ancient ruins. it’s a place that offers valuable insights into how we can all learn to savour life more fully.

Quality > Quantity

Whether it’s food, clothing or experiences, europeans tend to prioritize quality over quantity. This means, savouring a fresh home cooked meal rather than rushing through fast food. it means choosing fewer, better-made items that last longer. This way, we more greatly appreciate the things we do and consume.

Enjoy Leisure without Guilt

europeans have mastered the art of leisure. From the afternoon siesta in spain to long leisurely lunches in italy, taking time to relax and enjoy life is not only accepted but encouraged. this is about more than just taking breaks, it’s about understanding that rest and relaxation are essential to a balanced, healthy life. Embrace the idea that leisure is not a luxury but a necessity, make time for activities that bring you joy.

Walk more, drive less

Walking is an essential part of daily life in many (if not most) european cities. it’s not only a practical way to get around, but also a chance to change your environment, enjoy the outdoors and stay active. incorporate walking into your routine, whether it’s walking to work, running an errand or just taking a stroll in the evening.

Live in The Present

Rather than constantly planning for the future or dwelling on the past, focus on enjoying here and now. Practice mindfulness and being present in your daily life. Whether you’re working, spending time with friends or enjoying a hobby, try to immerse yourself fully and enjoy the moment you’re in.

healthy work life balance

work-life balance is a fundamental aspect of the european lifestyle. many countries prioritize shorter work hours, extended vacations and policies to support a healthy work-life balance. while it may not always be possible to change your work schedule, you can still strive to create more balance in your life. set boundaries between work and personal time, take regular breaks and make sure to prioritize activities that bring you joy outside of work.

by incorporating these european-inspired practices into your life, you can live a more balanced, fulfilling and joyful existence. Savouring life isn’t about making drastic changes, it’s about appreciating the present moment and finding joy in the simple pleasures that each day brings.

Ciao!

Love, Laura
